William F. Wiley, MD is a cataract and refractive surgeon and the Medical Director of the Cleveland Eye Clinic, where he has practiced since 2002. He has performed more than 75,000 cataract and refractive procedures and was among the first surgeons in the United States to implant the Light Adjustable Lens, the iStent, and the Hydrus microstent. Fifteen patents in his name span ophthalmic surgical instruments and pharmaceutical compositions, and in 2025 Newsweek ranked him #20 in the nation for cataract surgery among America’s Leading Doctors. Dr. Wiley is President of the Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society, Chairman of the AECOS Board of Directors, and Editor Emeritus of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today. He is annual-meeting faculty for ASCRS, AAO, and AECOS.

Over his career he has performed more than 75,000 cataract and refractive procedures, building one of the region’s highest-volume anterior-segment practices and a reputation for adopting new technology before it becomes routine. He was among the first surgeons in the United States to implant the Light Adjustable Lens, the iStent, and the Hydrus microstent.

Dr. Wiley is also a designer and inventor. Fifteen patents in his name span ophthalmic surgical instruments, devices, and pharmaceutical compositions — including a family of flexible and expandable phacoemulsification tip designs developed between 2021 and 2025, and a series of surgical-sedation formulations co-invented with John Berdahl, MD and assigned to Melt Pharmaceuticals. In 2025, Newsweek and Statista named him one of America’s Leading Doctors, ranked #20 in the nation for cataract surgery.

He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio in 1998 following a chemistry degree from the University of Virginia, completed his ophthalmology residency and chief residency at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago, and trained under Svyatoslav Fyodorov at the Eye Microsurgery Complex in Moscow and at Harvard’s Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He completed a refractive surgery fellowship at the Cleveland Eye Clinic and the Physician CEO program at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management.

Dr. Wiley is President of the Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society, Chairman of the AECOS Board of Directors, and Editor Emeritus of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at University Hospitals / Case Western Reserve University and annual-meeting faculty for ASCRS, AAO, and AECOS.
