William F. Wiley, MD is a cataract and refractive surgeon and the Medical Director of the Cleveland Eye Clinic. Over the course of his career he has performed more than 75,000 cataract and refractive procedures, building one of the region’s highest-volume anterior-segment practices and a reputation for adopting new technology before it is routine.

That reputation is literal. Dr. Wiley was among the first surgeons in the United States to implant the Light Adjustable Lens, the iStent, and the Hydrus microstent — each time putting Cleveland patients among the first in the country to benefit from a technology his peers were still evaluating.

He is also a designer. Fifteen patents in his name span ophthalmic surgical instruments, devices, and pharmaceutical compositions — a family of flexible and expandable phacoemulsification tip designs developed between 2021 and 2025 that reconsider the instrument at the center of cataract surgery, and a series of surgical-sedation formulations co-invented with John Berdahl, MD and assigned to Melt Pharmaceuticals.

The specialty has noticed. In 2025, Newsweek and Statista named Dr. Wiley one of America’s Leading Doctors — ranked #20 in the nation for cataract surgery.

Alongside the surgical practice, Dr. Wiley serves the specialty in its governing and editorial institutions: President of the Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society, Chairman of the AECOS Board of Directors, and Editor Emeritus of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today. He is meeting faculty for ASCRS, AAO, and AECOS, and sees patients at the Cleveland Eye Clinic and Clear Choice Custom LASIK Center.
